For my portfolio project I am particularly interested in creating an opening to a romantic-comedy film. These films typically feature light-hearted and humorous plotlines centered around romantic themes/ love interests. One great example of a romcom is the 1999 film, 10 Things I Hate About You.
This film follows a young, spunky girl as her through the highs and lows of high school. In the film a her love interest gets paid to ask her out. As love interests typically do, they end up falling for each other. This film is packed adult jokes, snide remarks and all the lovey-dovey things that come with the term rom-com.What drew me into this genre the most was the fact that these are the types of movies everyone can enjoy and relate to in some way. Films of this genre tell a good message in a light-hearted way that makes the experience enjoyable and emotionally heavy to watch as many films of other genres are.
Another genre I've had my eye on is drama. Drama's interest me because their is a lot more storytelling involved than "fluff" or light-heartedness. This genre is centered around more serious ideas/ plotlines and is filled with sub-genres. A drama film that comes to mind is the 2001 film Broke Back Mountain.
This film follows 2 characters played by Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger as they fall in love with each other. As time goes on they both get married to different girls but still battle their inner demons all while still being in love with each other.Films in the dramatic genre typically challenge social norms, and make statements about real issues. This is why I believe these films are such a great way of storytelling.
Both of these genre's are very distinct from one another; I even find that the features like most about one are not at all seen in the other and that is why I like it.
